Losing your special pet can be devastating for both children and the adults in the family.
Having a funeral and burial ceremony can help the family with the healing process of losing a little friend.

Home Burial:
A home burial is a good option if you plan on living in your home for a long time.

• Look for a place on your property that has special significance. Choose a tree or shrub or another area associated with a fond memory for the burial site of your pet.
• Place your pet inside the decorated coffin (box) lined with the resting stuffing along with the special message insert that the children have written.
• Then dig a hole two to three feet deep and six inches wider than the little coffin. This depth is necessary to keep other animals from digging up your pet's grave.
• Gently place your pet's coffin in the grave and let the children recall some of the fun times they had with their pet as part of the goodbye ceremony.
• When your farewells have been said, gently cover the little coffin with dirt and gently pat down the dirt.
• Place the stepping stone which your children have made and decorated to mark the resting place of the families loved pet.

RAINBOW BRIDGE
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play Together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt of maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember then in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.


They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge Together....

Our pets are part of our family, enriching our day-to-day lives with their unconditional love. The loss of a much-loved pet is very traumatic. This is the most difficult time to face in our owner/pet relationship. This becomes even more difficult when having to contemplate euthanasia. In some cases euthanasia can be the kindest and most important decision that you make for your animal. When an animal's quality of life deteriorates we must work together to alleviate the animal's suffering. A veterinarian's job is to assess your pet's health and level of suffering; it is the owner's job to focus on the day-to-day behaviour and comfort of the animal. Together we can make the right decision.

It is important to remember that as pet owners, we have the right to grieve and we can take as much time as we need. Each person has a unique reaction and response to death.

When old age and disease takes our pets from us, no one is to blame. Our job is to provide care and love until it is time to say good-bye. It's very important to take time to grieve, talk to your veterinarian, friends that understand, a bereavement hotline or professional therapist.
